Jodi G Designs transformed this Santa Barbara vacation home into an airy coastal getaway, mere steps from the owner’s main house. Jodi’s distinctive designs brought the couple’s dream to life, conjuring a vibrant living space that elegantly showcases the couple’s fine art collection, yet provides the comfort and warmth of a summer home shared with grandchildren.

The existing space was gutted to create a bright, open ambiance that features sweeping coastal views. Jodi G Designs collaborated closely with the couple, hand selecting fabric, artwork and one-of-a-kind furniture to invigorate the space. The couple commissioned artwork by Karen Bezuidenhout, painted glass pieces by Cassandria Blackmore and driftwood furniture by Michael Fleming. The custom dining room table was cut from a solid Suar tree trunk, its ends salvaged and made into end tables for the living room sofa.

The grandchildren’s rooms evoke a sense of play and adventure. Colors, furniture and custom artwork, including pieces adorned with inspirational messages, were selected with each grandchild in mind. Commissioned paintings of the family’s adopted Santa Barbara Zoo animals cheerfully decorate the walls.

The Driftwood Beach House is a welcoming refuge for friends and family, inviting all that cross its threshold to bask in the warm hospitality and vivacious spirit of this amazing family.

The first time I discovered Montecito, I fell in love. My husband and I moved here over fourteen years ago when my husband's innovation, Spinning®, was at the height of its global success and our Los Angeles life had grown increasingly chaotic. We craved the simplicity of a life vitalized by love, family, friends and a deep reverence for nature - the elements that had originally inspired our fitness enterprise.

I wanted to create a home that embodied the harmony and tranquility of a remote Balinesian retreat; a home that would restore us from within. So I began to pour the heart and soul of our family into every inch of the property; room by room, plant by plant. The details of this home are what make it so beautiful. Custom stonework, bamboo furniture and imported textiles from Africa and French Polynesia provide natural contrasts of color, texture and story. Large French doors and picture windows throughout the home create a seamlessness between indoor spaces and the surrounding rainforest-like grounds. Lush gardens are interspersed with open-air palapas which provide a welcoming space for exercise, meditation and star-studded sleeps.

This home is our oasis. A place to connect, inspire and to let go. A place to gather, cook, play and soak up sun-drenched Santa Barbara afternoons. Our paradise, our sanctuary, our secret garden.

In-Trinity® is an elevated fitness board and training system that invigorates the body and revitalizes the mind through movement. Developed and launched worldwide by the creator of Spinning® (and also my husband), Johnny G, Santa Barbara was selected as the location for the brand’s first dedicated fitness studio. An international headquarters for daily classes, instructor certification and program development, this project was an opportunity to develop an integrated studio experience from the ground up that would become the benchmark for all new studios globally.

I was deliberate about designing a space that would enhance the restorative experience of the workout itself. From the moment you enter the studio, you are transported into a world of peacefulness, primed for an experience of physical and mental revitalization. In an In-Trinity practice, the boards are set in a circle to create connection and unity between participants during class. I extended this wisdom to develop an open concept; creating flow between the entry, boutique and studio spaces. An open-air birch wall gently distinguishes the studio and retail boutique, offering visual transparency and fluidity between the interiors. I favored natural materials and a calming color palette, comprised of calming whites, creams and grays. Lounge areas were designed for guests to convene before and after class – gather, drink a tonic, have a snack. Handmade dream catchers, mudcloth textiles and stone-carved words of wisdom infuse the space with character and soul.

TABLETOP DETAILS

Elegantly situated atop a prominent perch in Santa Barbara, this property boasts stunning 360 degree views of the surrounding coastline and Santa Ynez mountains. This design project was all about creating a space as bright, airy and naturally rich as the home’s environs. As a host site for a variety of annual charitable events, I reimagined a space that evokes the same sense of intrinsic warmth and hospitality as its owners.

I began designing with a blank slate, gutting the space to remove dark floors and dated cabinetry. I added in all new lighting and opted for lighter floors, woodwork and finishes, revitalizing each room with a fresh feeling and modern vibe. Furniture was custom designed and upholstered in calming hues of white, taupe, and various shades of blue and green. The home’s neutral palette showcases the vibrancy of the owners’ exquisite art collection, which includes rare paintings and glasswork by artists from across the US.

The result lends itself as effortlessly to high profile social gatherings as it does to private family life, all amidst a backdrop of insurmountable natural beauty.

In light of California’s drought, the time came to reimagine my beloved garden into an eco-conscious landscape. Our property embodies the tranquility of a private Balinese paradise, replete with lush gardens, outdoor dining areas and open-air palapas for meditation and intimate gatherings with our friends and family. I wanted to maintain this sense of escape, as well as the rich tapestry of color and dimension that makes the space feel dynamic and alive.

I replaced most of our lawn with gravel to create a tropical beachscape. Our stone pool and surrounding lounge areas give the sense of being transported to a private tropical beach. New ground lights and lanterns line the pathways that lead to our palapas and outdoor dining areas, casting ambient light in the evenings. Vintage lanterns from the South Pacific hang from the large trees, twinkling in the evening breezes. I placed potted succulents and stone Buddha statues throughout the garden, to enrich the space with texture and color.

The result feels fresh, inspired and equally as inviting to gather under sunny skies and starry nights to connect and rejuvenate.
